Lost in Space [retrospective] [01.22.19]

The VIBES student-run concert series started the year strong with a brief showcase of compositions from students of the Peabody Computer Music department. Each VIBES concert has a theme, and the theme for our January 2019 concert was "Lost in Space" inspired by the 1965 TV series and the 2018 "reboot" featured on Netflix. Compositions ranged in focus from conveying stories of extra-terrestrial romance and tragedy to answering the question of what communication would like between humans and other life forms. Featured on the program were composers Norvin Tu-Wang, Zijun Wang, Erik Fredriksen, Jingzhe Wang, and Scott Li.

Compositions heard in the program showcased excellent use of samples and signal processing to bring stories - such as humans trapped in space or the tale of love in space - to life. Mixes were well-balanced, and the pieces were immersive, particularly in the case of the re-scoring of the film "Arrival" by Norvin Tu-Wang. Scott Li's piece, being the only piece featuring a live performance with the composer playing violin, provided good contrast to the other fixed media pieces and finished off the show nicely.

Below are some wonderful pictures taken by Mofan Lai and a short clip of Scott Li performing Memoriae: I. Fragments!

Our first featured #VIBEScomposer is Xiaogang Xiang! Xiaogang is a sophomore Computer Music student that wrote a tribute to the video games that were part of our childhood memories; fittingly, this piece is called called called “Mario’s Wacky World”. An excerpt from Xiaogang’s program note: “This is a piece which was made by combining Mario’s voice samples, synths, and electronic software instruments together… I want to look back at memories from those years we spent playing Mario; it brought us so much fun during that time. I hope you all enjoy it and laugh out loud!” Check out documentation for our “nostalgia” concert in our blog; link in bio! □ @mofanlai #VIBEScomposer #VIBESnostalgia #PeabodyComputerMusic #electroacoustic #marioswackyworld #supermario64 #supermariobros
